Computers are now become the most important component of peoples. Most of work are depends on computers from offices to industry and from school to universities. Role of computers in education has been widely studied and computers are now main component of education system. Computers are now main part of formal and non formal education. Computer has been integrated as compulsory subject in curriculum.
Following are some of education areas where computer technologies have been deployed.
Instruction and Learning: Computers are large used in instruction in classrooms. Computers mostly used for instruction, lecturers in universities, for presentations in conferences and proceeding. Teachers through the assistance of Projectors and PowerPoint or in other format deliver their instructions. Smart board is another technology which is also using in classroom for effective instructions. Computer generated graphics, digital images, animated images and videos are using in instruction and learning. Intelligent tutoring systems, game based learning systems, collaborative learning systems have been used for support instruction and learning in education. Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is one of great milestone of educational computing have changed rational instruction strategies used for online learning. Stanford Online, Coursera, Khan Academy, Udacity and edX are free MOOC widely used by millions of students.
Computer games also used for learning. Game based learning is one of academic research area to design and develop computer games for effective learning. Computers simulation has been widely used for research and learning in chemical sciences, Human Physiology, Computer networks and space sciences.
Assessment: Assessment and measurement is very important part of education system. Traditional assessment methods have their own standards. Computers have also influence education assessment methods. Computer based assessment test now being used in many schools, colleges and universities. Many institutes are adapting this new edge technology. MCQ’s type’s questions have been assessed by computers now days. Moodle is one of leading learning management system which has been used by different universities for their examination and assessment processes. These learning systems also used for uploading assignment works, lectures notes and other educational activities.
Digital Library: Library is important component of educational organization. Technology helps educational, researchers and students access thousands of articles, books and other learning resources through internet. Digital library is electronic repository of books and other leaning materials. Library information systems are special software which is used by library science professionals to organizing libraries using computers. Koha is one of open source library management used by different educational organizations for managing their libraries. Different organizations and universities initiated big projects for implementing digital libraries. ArXiv, CiteSeerX, Google books some of digital libraries available on internet.
